Typical of Blue Eagle sales and rental activities was construction of the 70-acre North Grove Medical Complex in Spartanburg. Here, according to John Gramling III, president of Gramling Bros. Contracting, Inc., a bare ground location was transformed into a productive building package. This encompassed stripping and stockpiling original earthwork; balancing cuts and fills; and installing, compacting and backfilling of underground storm water runoff piping, sanitary sewers and other utility lines.
A Caterpillar model 325C LCR hydraulic excavator with a reinforced bucket dug the initial 16-foot deep trench. It was followed closely with a Cat 322C L excavator side casting the recently excavated material away from the trench to the safe angle of repose as is required for safety by OSHA. The trench, often requiring a steel safety box when no room is available, was open cut about 16 feet deep. The Cat 325C also handled most of the required 3,000 feet of various lines. These ranged in size from 36- to 48-inch diameter pipe, along with some smaller sewer pipe. Jay Burnett, the superintendent on the project, said the first backfill is put in around the pipe in 8-inch lifts and compacted with a BOMAG BT60/4 four-cycle engine tamper. The backfill lifts are brought up this way to just over three-quarters to the top of the pipe. |

The first phase of the stripping along with cut and fill earthwork was handled by Cat 615 and 620 single- and double-engine scrappers pushed by D-6 and D-8 dozers.

With their compact design, the new BW124-40 series rollers are versatile and maneuverable, yet offer capabilities and features similar to larger models. The series consists of two models: the BW124DH-40 smooth drum roller and the BW124PDH-40 padfoot roller. An optional leveling blade adds versatility to the series.
The new roller series includes three models: the BW177D-40 and BW177DH-40 smooth drum rollers and the BW177PDH-40 padfoot roller. All three offer a 66-inch working widths and are powered by Tier III compliant Cummins diesel engines.
The 12-ton class rollers are powered by a four-cylinder water-cooled Deutz diesel engine that meets EPA tier III requirements. The series is designed for efficient compaction of granular, mixed and semi-cohesive soils, making it ideal for a variety of site preparation applications, including highway construction and maintenance, airports, streets and subdivisions, parking lots and landfills.
The new BW213-40 Series comprises three models: the BW213D-40 and BW213DH-40 smooth drum rollers and the BW213PDH-40 padfoot roller.
