MAINTENANCE FOR LIFE
Check the engine oil frequently in the early life of the machine. Make the first oil and filter change according to the manufacturers recommendations. At this time, it’s also a good idea to retighten bolted connections on the intake and exhaust tubes, oil sump and engine mounts. Retighten all other bolted connections on the compactor as well.

Proper maintenance should begin on the day the machine is delivered and continue throughout its life cycle. Before you put the machine into service, read the maintenance section of the operator’s manual.  Pay special attention to running-in procedures and maintenance as well as items that need attention as the machine gets older.

As hours build up, check the recommended maintenance schedule often for special or infrequent maintenance items, such as changing the hydraulic oil, coolant and/or coolant pump, fuel filter and/or precleaner and planetary gear oil, if applicable. Check items like hoses, v-belts, batteries and air filters frequently. Don’t forget the engine’s preheating system - you’ll need it for cold weather starts.

Finally, check the items that contribute to operator comfort. Switch on the heating and the air conditioning systems for 10 minutes each every month. This helps to keep them functioning properly. Clean the air conditioning condenser.  Fill the windshield washer tank with fluid and replace the fresh air and circulation air filters in the cabin, if necessary.

PREVENTION IS THE KEY
Landfill operators undoubtedly need to pay more attention to equipment maintenance issues than an average car owner. Not only is a refuse compactor expensive and expected to perform over a long period of time, but it also must do so under extreme circumstances.
Manufacturers have instituted several product design features to protect compactors and cut down on maintenance time. Still, the complexity of the machine’s function requires careful consideration of how to keep it running at peak efficiency. Therefore, by instituting a simple, yet consistent, preventative maintenance schedule, a landfill operator can ensure the refuse compactor will do its job for the long haul.
