Home Refuse Compactors A Landfill Comes Clean About Compaction
A Landfill Comes Clean About Compaction Print E-mail

Cleanliness is not a word typically associated with landfills. However, as the staff at the L.P. Gill Landfill will tell you, cleanliness is a primary concern when selecting a landfill compactor.

Like all landfills, L.P. Gill is always looking for ways to increase the life and efficiency of their operation. The landfill recently purchased a larger compactor to help with this effort. However, they still claim that clean wheels and an operator-friendly design are primary considerations when selecting compactors. As the L.P. Gill staff has discovered, these elements not only increase efficiency by reducing maintenance and increasing traction, but more importantly, a machine with wheels designed to stay clean can significantly increase compaction densities.

BC1172RB-2 refuse compactorThe 70-acre L.P. Gill Landfill in Jackson, Neb. is located 11 miles west of Sioux City, IA and collects municipal solid waste from within a 100-mile radius of the site. This collection area covers portions of three states including Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. With an average of 700- to 750-tons of refuse delivered daily, it is essential that employees at the landfill work quickly and efficiently while achieving optimum compaction results.

We bought the larger BC1172RB this year to help achieve more compaction.

Achieving good compaction can considerably extend the landfill's life and save the landfill operator a significant amount of money. "The cost of the space is tremendous. Extending the life of the landfill just four or five years can save a lot of money," said Gene Hansen, L.P. Gill Landfill manager. "The need to increase the landfill's life makes compaction a very important consideration, and the selection of a refuse compactor can drastically affect this component.
