Maintenance concerns were also addressed with the new tampers. "A rammer is basically built to destroy itself," said Smith. "It jumps around, vibrates and beats itself up. It's just the nature of the application. But the new four-cycle units have held up very well. Every hundred hours or so I'll put new spark plugs in, change the oil and the air filters and they're ready to go again. There's very little downtime."
Following the successful use of the two tampers on the Damonte Ranch High School job site, Q&D purchased nine additional BT65/4 units. "They've been used on several different job sites just about every day since their purchase," said Smith. "The operators like them because they're easy to use. I like them because they're easy to take care of. We'll definitely be adding more in the future."
