But even more important was the elimination of oil and fuel contamination problems. "The engine is designed with baffles to prevent oil from leaking into other areas," said Smith. "To put it another way, you can run this machine upside-down without a problem. I've tried it just to see if it would work. You can start them up, flip them over and let them run" (Though possible with this new design, running the unit upside down is not a practice recommended by the manufacturer as prolonged exposure may eventually result in damage to the engine).

"They have more power and will outrun our two-cycle tampers in a foot race."

Previous four-cycle engines were not specifically designed for the rigors of tamping applications. Tampers were de-tuned to extend engine life, but at the expense of power and compactive effort. Since the new Honda GX100 engines were designed for tamping applications and the tamper components were specifically built to accommodate this engine, the result was a tamper that could handle abuse, while also providing outstanding performance.

"They have more power and will outrun our two-cycle tampers in a foot race," said Smith. "And when you're able to save time, you're able to save money."
