Located in the fast-growing southeast section of Reno, Damonte Ranch is an affluent 2,000-acre community that is currently under construction. Slated to open in the fall of 2003, Damonte Ranch High School, located on a 62-acre site, is part of the final phase of the community development. Posing such engineering challenges as sewer, water and electrical installation work on a tight deadline, the project was a difficult testing ground for the tampers.

BOMAG 4-Cycle TamperFollowing nearly four months of continuous use, Q&D got an education as to what these new machines could do - and was impressed with the results.

"One of the first things we noticed with the BOMAG tampers was the design," said Smith. "The earlier four-cycle tamper designs were wide and bulky. The handles were wider than the tamping foot, which would pose a problem since you couldn't easily compact the inside corner of a trench. The handles would be rubbing up against the side of the trench, but you weren't getting compaction where it was needed. Operators would accommodate by tilting the units sideways - then we had a safety hazard on our hands."

Smith found the BOMAG tampers much more accommodating. "With these new units, the handle design allows you to easily work into any area," said Smith.
