The Rhythm of the Rollers - Test Strips Print E-mail

Test Strip Basics

To establish the right rolling pattern for a particular application, it is essential to utilize a test strip. Test strips act as control measures to determine what will take place during mainline production. A dry run of sorts, the test strip offers a practice situation in which roller operators can try various rolling patterns and speeds on the specified asphalt mix.

Defining test strips seems to vary from contractor to contractor. Some may prefer to monitor a particular tonnage of mix, whereas others use a specified length of mat. Though state DOTs differ on if and how they require test strips to be conducted, incorporating this practice is critical when working with end result specifications and quality assurance programs.

No matter how it is defined, there are three fundamental rules for rolling an effective test strip: (1) take into account all rollers planned for each zone in the rolling train, (2) operate at a proper travel speed, and (3) develop a rolling pattern that will be used in production.
